United Nations Day

Dear Parents and Students,

October 24 is United Nations Day. This day recognizes the United Nations and all who serve and participate in this world organization.

The United Nations is dedicated to world peace and to the betterment of humanity through a wide range of programs from world hunger to environment and health issues. Almost all of the more than 100 countries in the world are members of this organization.

Click to see the list of countries who are United Nations members. Do you see the United States? Can you tell when the United States joined the United Nations? Can you figure how many years ago the United States became a member of the Unnited Nations.

In class we will be creating and "flying" flags of members of the United Nations. Have fun playing Name That Flag together. Enjoy seeing all the diverse, beautiful flags flown by countries all over the world.

Learning the States

Dear Parents,

This semester your child has to learn the location of all the states in the United States. You can help your child by playing Name That State together.

Have fun!

The TEKS for Social Studies and TEKS Tips

Dear Parents,

All school year long, your child will be learning social studies skills that are found in the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills).

When you have a chance, take a look at the TEKS your child will be learning this year. Whether it's a history TEKS, a geography TEKS, a culture TEKS, or an economics TEKS, you can help your child learn the TEKS at home. For example, the next time you travel, share the map you plan to use with your child. "Read" the map together and talk about the route you will take.

I will give you tips for integrating the TEKS at home at least once each month, so watch for more TEKS TIPS!

Ms. Ray
